Frequently Asked Questions
Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in evaluating and treating mental health conditions in the context of a patient’s overall health. A psychiatrist can prescribe medication to treat mental illnesses, as well as provide individual therapy.
After you contact me to request services, we will have an initial telephone consultation (15-20 min) to discuss your treatment request and whether my services are the right fit for you. Following that, we will schedule an in-person intake appointment (60-90 min) for an in-depth evaluation. At that time, we will determine a treatment plan. Generally, patients who are seen for medication management will be seen on a monthly basis (30 min sessions), and those who are seen for individual therapy or combined treatment will be seen more frequently (45 minute sessions).
Please note that I am not in-network with insurance companies. The fee is due at the time of service. I do not submit claims to insurance companies but can provide you with the necessary documentation to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network benefit reimbursement. Prior to our first session, I strongly recommend speaking directly with your insurance company to determine your out-of-network benefits.
You may ask them about any deductible you may have, as well as your out-of-pocket maximum, and if there is different reimbursement for telepsychiatry vs. in-person services. During our initial phone conversation, I can provide the appropriate CPT codes you may need to describe my services to your insurance provider.
My goal is to provide the best and most complete care to my patients. Unfortunately, I have found that some insurance companies can intervene in various ways that are ultimately detrimental to patient care (requiring information that patients might prefer to keep private, dictating treatment, and encouraging shorter sessions that do not allow for the time needed to address a patient’s concerns). As noted above, I can work with you to support reimbursement from your insurance company, whenever possible.
We will discuss fees during our introductory phone call. I charge a fixed fee per session, and fees are commensurate with other psychiatrists within New York City.
I offer both in-person appointments in Park Slope, Brooklyn as well as telehealth visits on a HIPAA compliant platform. All intake sessions need to be scheduled in person.
To request an appointment, please fill out this brief form HERE. We will then schedule a time to speak for about 15 minutes so that I can get a sense of what you’re looking for and whether my services are the right fit for you. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions about my practice, and we will discuss fees.
Unfortunately, the psychiatric community has not historically affirmed patients who identify as queer or LGBTQ+. There was a time when homosexuality was defined as a mental disorder, and, even more recently when transgender or gender expansive individuals were not treated in ways that affirmed their gender identity. Members of the LGBTQ+ community may know about this history or may have experienced care that was not beneficial. I am committed to ensuring that patients feel that they can be their true selves while in my care, and that their treatment allows them to thrive, openly, as themselves.
